COMPUTER & CLOUD BACKUP
When did you last check your backup? Do you have a backup?
WHAT IS A GOOD BACKUP SOLUTION?
A layered approach to backups…
Experts recommend the 3-2-1 rule for backup: at least three copies of your data, two local (on different devices) and at least one off-site. For many people, this means the original data on your computer, a backup or set of backups on an external hard drive or NAS, and another on a cloud backup service.
Having a backup in place simply isn’t good enough…
Backups need to be monitored to ensure they are running as expected and periodically tested to ensure you can recover files from your backup sources. These are tasks that many people either overlook, forget about or completely ignore. You also need to have a retention policy in place. How long do you need to store your backups? Are there any legal or compliance rules that you need to adhere to? If you aren’t sure we can help.
An essential part of our managed IT service is daily monitoring and testing of your backups to ensure that when you need them they are available to recover from.
BACKUP TYPES & DESTINATIONS
After selecting your backup destinations and retention times you need to decide on what and how frequently you want to backup. Do you need Full Backups with system images or just file data? Do you have database applications? Are differential or incremental backups ok for you? We generally recommend at minimum daily backups but usually use a combination of these backups to give you several recovery options during each day. Let us help determine your needs and answer these important questions.
Local Backups
Local Backup is frequently used as an option in small and medium sized businesses. Often businesses will use an external hard drive or NAS (Network Attached Storage) to backup locally on the network. This is an inexpensive way to backup your files and system image. This is a great first step to protecting your data from hardware failures.
Cloud Backup
Cloud Backup brings an additional layer of business recovery and continuity to your backup solution. We highly recommend all businesses have some for of cloud backup deployed in addition to local backups.
Cloud-to-Cloud
Cloud-to-Cloud or C2C is exactly what it sounds like. C2C is used to backup cloud services like Microsoft 365 or GSuite allowing you to set data retention periods and avoid accidental or malicious deletion from these services. While Microsoft & Google offer limited restoration of deleted files they should not be considered a backup solution for your files.
Shadow Copies
Shadow copies run at certain intervals and create a point in time "File History" that allows you to quickly recover a file that may have been accidently edited or deleted. This is generally not a true backup as the files still tend to live on the same media (unless you specified otherwise). None the less this is a handy option for businesses to deploy.
